Travel can be such a PAIN. What are you doing to measure traveler wellness?

Posted by Bala Chandran on Feb 19, 2020 12:13:00 PM

I used to travel a ton in my past life in consulting – I remember waking up every Monday morning at 4am to catch my 5:30am flight, and getting back home on the late flight on Thursday night. A few months into the project, I would have given anything for an extra hour of sleep.

Travel burnout is real. According to a YouGov survey on behalf of NexTravel 20% of travelers say that travel has a negative impact on their mental health, and an ARC survey showed that 15% of road warriors are burned out or close to it.

Worried about that connecting flight? We crunched the numbers so you don't have to.

I see you – leaning halfway out of your seat before the plane lands so you're ready to grab your bag and sprint to make your connecting flight – and I'm here to tell you it's going to be ok. Lumo is here to help.

At Lumo, we recognize that not all delays are created equal. A 30-minute delay on a nonstop flight may not matter much, but could be the difference between making your connection or not on a connecting itinerary.

Travel smarter with the Lumo map

Posted by Bala Chandran on Jan 20, 2020 1:39:58 PM

We released the Lumo map last year, but it's worth re-upping given all the delays we've been having globally. From winter delays in Chicago to  disruptions caused by volcano Taal in the Phillippines to delays caused by the fires in Australia, it's hard to keep up with all global events that could delay your flight. Luckily, you've got Lumo – a quick look at the Lumo map tells you the state of delays right now, as well as delays expected over the next 48 hours. Just click on the map icon on the top right of the page and view the Lumo Index by airport to help you plan your trip better. We keep track of everything from weather disruptions to airline waivers to Air Traffic Control restrictions to keep you updated on what to expect.

Four ways to spot bad AI

Posted by Bala Chandran on Nov 27, 2019 10:23:09 AM

I gave a brief talk at the Beat Live in New York in September on how to spot bad AI. It bugs me that the words AI and Machine Learning get thrown around so loosely and are rarely scrutinized, especially in travel. Also, while other industries are starting to have discussions around the ethics of machine learning and AI, travel's conversations around AI have stayed pretty superficial. A version of this was published in The Beat (subscription required).

So how are Lumo’s predictions different from Google’s?

Posted by Bala Chandran on Oct 11, 2019 1:28:42 AM

When Google announced last year that they were releasing a flight delay prediction feature, we were thrilled! Being the only company that predicted delays was lonely, and we were excited that Google would bring some much-needed attention to a problem we feel strongly about.
